Potential Application for Micro-Particles Manipuation Utilizing Electrokinesis in an Electrodeless Dielectrophoresis Chip
Abstract—This study presented the feasibility of themicroparticle manipulation, i.e., trapping and separation approach, utilizing an electrodeless dielectrophoresis microfluidic chip. Experimental observations were facilitated toinvestigate the microparticle electrokinesis behavior by tuningof the operation parameters, i.e., driving frequency and appliedpotential. These results not only revealed the fluid cloud begenerated an electroosmotic flow (EOF), but also categorizedthe optimum trapping/separating schemes for the differentparticle sizes. Besides, the proposed operating mode can be usedto continuously trap/separate particles and simultaneouslyconvey them through the microfluidic device, eliminating theneed for an additional micropump. Certainly, the device can beenvisioned as a single automated device that supports themulti-functions such as transportation, separation, anddetection, facilitating the realization of a Lab-on-a-Chip.
